A Story of Deceit: Former Santa Cruz County Treasurer’s Alleged Financial Misconduct
In a shocking turn of events, employees of Santa Cruz County’s former treasurer have come forward with revelations of deceit and embezzlement. Elizabeth Gutfahr, who resigned from her elected position amidst accusations of misappropriating funds, is now facing a lawsuit for allegedly wiring millions of dollars out of the county’s accounts.
A recent report from the Arizona Auditor General’s Office sheds light on the extent of Gutfahr’s alleged misconduct. Over a 10-year period, she is suspected of making over 180 unauthorized wire transfers totaling $39 million. What’s even more alarming is that she managed to conceal these transactions from her own staff, consisting of just six employees.
According to the report, Gutfahr not only deceived her colleagues but also manipulated them by offering financial gifts and favors. Some employees admitted to receiving help with bills, cash gifts for their children, and even a car from the treasurer. The former treasurer even managed to bypass internal controls by coercing her chief deputy into sharing passwords for wire transfers.
Despite suspicions raised by staff members, Gutfahr’s actions went unchecked by the county board of supervisors, who were ultimately responsible for overseeing her conduct. False financial reports were regularly submitted to county officials without any consequences, highlighting a glaring lack of accountability.
