Welcome Sam Leavitt: ASU’s New Starting Quarterback for 2024 SeasonArizona Sports Scene

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona State University football team has found their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season, and his name is Sam Leavitt. The redshirt freshman is poised to lead the Sun Devils to victory on Saturdays this year.

Leavitt expressed his excitement about being named the starter, saying, “If anything, it gives me more juice. Now I am the guy and I have to hold myself to that standard and now I have to keep that. You only stay at this if you perform, so just got to keep going and keep getting better.”

The talented quarterback transferred to ASU from Michigan State and made an impact in his limited playing time last season. With a completion rate of 65.2%, Leavitt showed promise on the field, throwing for 139 yards and two touchdowns, although he faced two interceptions.

Hailing from Oregon, Leavitt is decorated with accolades from his high school days, where he was named the 2022 Oregon Football Player of the Year and the 2022 MaxPreps Oregon High School Player of the Year. His impressive stats included 3,184 yards passing and 36 touchdowns in a championship-winning season at West Linn High School.

Following a rigorous training camp with ASU, Leavitt was elated to hear the news of his starting role. “All sorts of emotions,” he shared. “Mostly joy, and I had that idea coming along, that was my goal the whole time. But I took a moment to thank God for the opportunity and be appreciative for it.”

Coach Kenny Dillingham praised Leavitt’s ball security and work ethic during camp, noting his minimal interceptions despite intense competition within the team’s quarterback group. Leavitt himself acknowledged the support and guidance he receives from his fellow quarterbacks, emphasizing the importance of constant improvement and competition.

As Leavitt gears up for his debut as ASU’s starting quarterback, he holds onto a motto shared with his brother: ‘How great do you want to be?’ This mantra motivates him daily to push his limits and strive for excellence.

Excitement is building as Arizona State prepares to kick off the 2024 season against Wyoming at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Saturday, Aug. 31, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
