The Story Behind Arizona’s Song Choice at the Democratic National Convention
At this year’s Democratic National Convention, the traditional roll call took an unexpected turn in Chicago. Instead of a standard announcement of votes, each delegation presented their support for presidential nominee Kamala Harris with a fitting song, turning the event into a lively dance party.
The musical selections, curated by DJ Cassidy, were largely predictable. However, some choices raised eyebrows, like Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” for American Samoa. But the real standout was Arizona’s song choice, which paid homage to an iconic Phoenix-born rockstar.
So, what song did Arizona choose?
Arizona’s delegate opted for “Edge of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks, a song that holds deep significance for the singer. Born in Phoenix, Nicks drew inspiration for the track from a unique encounter in her hometown.
In a 2020 Facebook post, Nicks shared a story about a white winged dove she encountered while flying home from Phoenix in 1980. This mystical experience, coupled with the imagery of a menu she received during her flight, inspired her to pen the hit song.
Nicks recounted her emotional encounter with the dove outside her room, hearing its melodic coos that echoed the lyrics of her song. She believed the dove was a spiritual presence watching over her, a touching moment she shared with her fans.
The significance of “Edge of Seventeen” in Nicks’ career is profound. As the first woman to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once with Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and then as a solo artist in 2019, Nicks’ impact on the music industry is undeniable.
Arizona’s choice of “Edge of Seventeen” at the convention not only celebrated Nicks’ contribution to rock music but also highlighted the connection between the singer and her hometown of Phoenix.
