The Crest Way Fire: A Close Call for Yarnell Residents
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order Monday for a fire burning near Yarnell.
More than a dozen Yarnell residents are happy to be home after a small wildfire prompted evacuations Monday afternoon. The Crest Way Fire started just south of State Route 89A near Crest and Happy ways.
People living in the evacuation zone said the fire took them by surprise. Alexandra Howe, a woman living near Crest Way, described hearing a loud bang and then losing power. Others rushed home from work to retrieve pets, while kids were sent home early from school.
Despite initial fears, the fire moved away from houses and towards power lines and communication towers. Thanks to the quick response of fire crews, the blaze was brought under control without any reported damage, and evacuation orders were lifted after just a few hours.
This close call serves as a reminder of the dangers of living in a wildfire-prone area. In Yarnell, a town still healing from the devastating Yarnell Hill Fire over a decade ago, residents are thankful for the efforts of firefighters in keeping their community safe.
As we await more details on the fire’s origin, it’s crucial for residents in wildfire-prone areas to be prepared. The National Fire Protection Association recommends having an emergency supply kit ready to go in case of evacuation. This kit should include essentials like water, food, first aid supplies, and important documents.
Wildfire Go-Kit Essentials
Residents are urged to have an emergency supplies kit prepared in advance and easily accessible in case of evacuation. The kit should include:
- Three gallons of water per person
- A three-day supply of ready-to-eat food
- First-aid kit and medications
- Copies of important documents
In addition to these essentials, residents should also consider items like blankets, a radio, dust masks, matches, and a change of clothing stored in a waterproof container. The full NFPA checklist can be found here.
