The Sheriff’s Office Recommends Charges for Parents After Child Shoots Himself
A tragic incident in Mesa, Arizona has led to recommendations for criminal charges against the parents of a three-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself with a gun.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office stated on Wednesday that they are recommending charges be filed against the parents for endangering the child, who critically injured himself when he shot himself in the head on May 16 in Mesa.
According to MCSO, the mother reported that she was sitting in the dining room near the living room where her three-year-old son was playing on the couch. Upon hearing a loud bang, the mother rushed to her son and found him covered in blood with the gun nearby.
The child was taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where he was stabilized and later moved to rehabilitation.
The father allegedly told MCSO that he usually carried the pistol and had left it on the couch the night before the shooting occurred.
MCSO stated that charges are being recommended for endangering the child as the parents left a loaded firearm knowing that the child was playing in that area.
