Protecting the Navajo Nation: New Legislation for Uranium Transport

The Navajo Nation recently passed emergency legislation to fortify a tribal law regulating the transportation of radioactive material within their territory. This decision was prompted by the resurgence of uranium mining near the Grand Canyon, sparking concerns from environmentalists and Native American communities.

Navajo President, Buu Nygren, signed the legislation to ensure the safe transport of uranium ore from the Pinyon Plain Mine in northern Arizona to a mill in Utah. The law mandates advanced notification of shipping plans, payment of transport fees, and the submission of emergency preparedness plans.

Despite a ban on uranium mining, the tribe allowed transportation of ore through their lands in 2012, with regulatory measures for protection. However, the recent legislation aims to enhance these regulations and prioritize the safety of the community and resources.

Navajo Attorney General, Ethel Branch, emphasized the importance of responsible transport to prevent further contamination from past mining activities. Dialogue with Energy Fuels Inc. is ongoing to ensure compliance with the revised law and address historical environmental issues.

Energy Fuels remains optimistic about reaching an agreement to resume shipments, affirming their commitment to upholding safety standards. The company asserts that modern transport methods pose no risk to human health or the environment, aligning with federal and state regulations.

The Navajo law includes provisions for inspection of trucks, restrictions during tribal events, and penalties for non-compliance. The tribe is prepared to enforce these regulations to safeguard their land and people from potential hazards.

As discussions continue, the Navajo Nation stands firm in its commitment to protect its community and natural resources from the adverse effects of uranium transport. The revised legislation reflects a proactive approach to ensuring the well-being of the Navajo people.
