Exciting Upset: Northern Arizona Takes Down Sacramento State in Big Sky Conference Opener

Ty Pennington showcased his skills by throwing two touchdown passes, while former Highland star Ammon Allen made a big impact by returning a fumble for a score as Northern Arizona pulled off a stunning 34-16 upset over Sacramento State in the Big Sky Conference opener.

The game started with Sacramento State managing only three first-half field goals by Zach Schreiner, while Northern Arizona held a slim 10-9 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Northern Arizona extended their lead when Alex McLaughlin forced a fumble from the Sacramento State quarterback, which Ammon Allen scooped up and returned for a touchdown. Ty Pennington followed up with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tay Lanier, boosting their lead to 20-9. The Lumberjacks sealed the deal with a Darvon Hubbard 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Pennington finished the game with an impressive 21 of 25 passes completed for 240 yards. His connection with Lanier and White resulted in 13 catches for 158 yards.

Despite a late effort by Sacramento State, Northern Arizona’s defense remained strong, recovering three fumbles and outgaining Sac State by a margin of 355-221.
