In a surprising turn of events, more than 300 inmates at a Pima County detention center were evacuated on Friday evening due to an electrical fire. The incident occurred at the main jail annex of the Pima County Adult Detention Center in Tucson. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, leaving authorities puzzled about what sparked the blaze.
The fire broke out around 8:24 p.m. on July 12, prompting the evacuation of around 380 inmates as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, the Tucson Fire Department acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of the area. All inmates and corrections officers were safely accounted for, and those evacuated were cleared by medical personnel.
Although two corrections officers were taken to the hospital for further evaluation, the majority received on-site medical attention from EMS. Detectives from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Arson Unit are now on the scene, working diligently to uncover the root cause of the fire.
