“The Valley” is what locals call the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest. It includes major cities like Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Surprise, and more. Whether a city falls in the “East Valley” or “West Valley” depends on its relation to Phoenix.
The Valley’s cities have a combined population of over 4.8 million people, making it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the U.S. Maricopa County, where the Valley is situated, is the 4th largest county in the U.S., with a population of over 4.4 million people according to the 2020 Census.
Stretching over 9,000 square miles, Maricopa County is larger than several U.S. states and houses around 63% of Arizona’s population. The county boasts an impressive park system with over 120,000 acres of open space parks, trails, nature centers, and campgrounds.
Phoenix, the county seat and state capital, is the 5th most populous city in the country. Maricopa County was named after the Maricopa Native American Tribe.
