Former Republican Staffers Endorse Kamala Harris for President
A surprising move in the political world as more than 200 staffers who previously worked for Republican presidential nominees have come out in support of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election. These staffers, who worked for former President George H.W. Bush, former President George W. Bush, former Arizona Sen. John McCain, and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, believe that the alternative of a second term for GOP nominee Donald Trump is simply untenable and will cause harm to real, everyday people.
In an open letter, the 238 individuals encourage moderate Republicans and conservative independents to join them in endorsing Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, over Trump and his vice presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. Despite having ideological disagreements with Harris and Walz, the signatories emphasize the importance of preventing another term of Trump’s leadership, which they believe will have damaging effects on both the country and its democracy.
The signatories include a wide range of individuals, from campaign alums to intern, underscoring the breadth of support for Harris within the Republican ranks. They warn against the dangers of Trump’s chaotic leadership and his embrace of radical ideals, particularly Project 2025, which they believe will undermine democratic movements and weaken the country’s institutions.
This is not the first time these former staffers have crossed party lines in an election. In 2020, many of them supported Joe Biden over Trump. The trend of bipartisan support continues as more Republicans, such as Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles and former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, come out in favor of Harris.
