The Profit Behind Horseshoe Bend: How Page, Arizona Landed a Goldmine

When you think of the most famous river bend in the Southwest, you might picture the stunning views of Horseshoe Bend. But did you know that those picture-perfect moments come with a price tag of $10 per visitor? Gone are the days of free parking or shoulder parking – now, the City of Page is cashing in on the popularity of this iconic location.

According to documents obtained by 12News, the City of Page has raked in a staggering $20.3 million since 2019 by charging fees for parking and trail access at Horseshoe Bend. From a modest 40,000 visitors back in 2010, the site now attracts over 1.2 million people annually, thanks in part to social media.

With fame, however, came challenges. The old trail to the overlook was wearing down, visitors were creating their own paths, and sanitation was a growing concern. To address these issues, the city teamed up with the National Park Service to revamp the area, creating a new ADA-accessible trail and adding pit toilets for visitors’ convenience.

But all this comes at a cost. The $20.3 million generated has gone towards trail improvements, parking lot paving, fee booths, gate installations, and more. Even the National Park Service gets a cut of the revenue, further showcasing the economic impact of Horseshoe Bend.

Despite the significant expenses, Page Mayor Bill Diak remains optimistic about the future. Phase three upgrades are in the works, including plans for power and running water at the site. Once completed, the city may consider lowering the parking fee to cover operational costs.

Horseshoe Bend may be a goldmine for Page, but it’s also a testament to the power of accessibility and preservation. As Diak aptly sums it up, “This is so accessible, and it has a special view.” So, if you’re planning a visit to this iconic spot, remember to pack your sunscreen, water, and a little extra cash – it’s all part of the experience.
