The Battle for Maricopa County Sheriff
Jerry Sheridan has dedicated nearly forty years of his life to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and served as Joe Arpaio’s top chief for the last seven years.
During a recent PBS debate, Republican candidate Jerry Sheridan made headlines by admitting to defying a judge’s order regarding the discipline of deputies. He boldly stated that he would oppose a judge again in the future if he disagreed, showing his strong leadership qualities.
Sheridan’s defiance of U.S. District Judge Murray Snow during the 2007 Melendres lawsuit led to prolonged court oversight and costly reforms that continue to this day. Despite facing criticism for his actions, Sheridan remains steadfast in his decisions.
‘That’s why we’re in this mess’
Sheridan’s opponent, Democrat Tyler Kamp, believes that Sheridan’s actions have contributed to the current challenges faced by the MCSO. Kamp asserts that Sheridan’s defiance of court orders is a significant factor in the ongoing issues within the department.
Sheridan and Kamp Make Their Case
Both candidates emphasize their law enforcement experience as key qualifications for the sheriff’s position. Sheridan’s long tenure at MCSO and Kamp’s background with the Phoenix Police Department offer voters distinct choices in leadership styles.
After the debate, Sheridan defended his decisions, stating that he stood up for his deputies and believes in doing what is right, even if it means facing consequences. He remains confident in his ability to lead the MCSO effectively.
Judge: The only person suspended ‘was granted a raise and a promotion’
In a scathing assessment, Judge Snow criticized MCSO for mishandling disciplinary matters and failing to follow proper procedures. The judge’s findings highlighted systemic issues within the department that continue to impact its operations.
Sheridan is on Arizona Brady List of Problem Officers
As a result of the Melendres case, Sheridan’s name appears on the Arizona Brady List, a registry of law enforcement officials with misconduct allegations. Despite the controversy, Sheridan maintains his innocence, claiming he was following orders from his superiors.
Kamp’s Employee History Includes Sexual Harassment Claim
While Sheridan defended himself against criticism, Kamp faced questions about a past sexual harassment complaint filed against him during his time with the Phoenix Police Department. Kamp insists that he retired honorably and stands by his career achievements.
