Arizona Ranks Worst in the Nation for Public Education
When it comes to public education, Arizona continues to fall short. A recent survey conducted by the non-partisan Consumer Affairs has rated Arizona as the worst state in the country for public education in 2024. This ranking is based on several factors, including low teacher salaries, low test scores in math and reading, and inadequate funding for K-12 students.
Research specialist Rebecca Sowell highlighted the impact of low funding on Arizona’s education system. She noted that the state ranked poorly in various categories, leading to low test scores and high pupil-to-teacher ratios. According to the survey, Arizona has the most crowded public school classrooms in America.
Sowell emphasized the importance of adequate funding for education, stating that the lack of resources ultimately affects teacher salaries, academic performance, and graduation rates. Arizona currently ranks 50th in school funding and resources, a concerning trend that needs to be addressed.
The ongoing issue of underfunding public education in Arizona has been a recurring theme over the years. Critics point to the reluctance of the Republican-controlled state Legislature to allocate sufficient funds for K-12 schools. In contrast, the Empowerment Scholarship Account program, a less regulated school voucher program, continues to operate without a fixed budget.
Looking ahead, the new Legislature and Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs will face a $300 million funding shortfall in 2025. Voters will also need to approve a review of Prop 123, which has provided $300 million annually to K-12 schools since its inception in 2016.
