The Power of Yordan Alvarez: Astros Defeat Diamondbacks 8-0
Yordan Alvarez showcased his power game once again with his seventh multi-homer game, tying Chris Carter’s record for the most in a season in Astros history. In a dominant performance, the Houston Astros secured an 8-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.
The AL West leaders bounced back after a tough series in Cincinnati, led by Alvarez’s explosive bat. The young slugger hit two three-run homers, totaling six RBIs for the game. His first homer off Brandon Pfaadt in the fifth inning set the tone for the Astros, followed by another homer off Jordan Montgomery in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-0.
Alvarez’s performance left both fans and managers in awe. Houston manager Joe Espada praised Alvarez’s skills, emphasizing how he makes the game look effortless despite its difficulty. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged Alvarez’s power and intelligence at the plate, highlighting the consequences of pitching mistakes against a hitter of Alvarez’s caliber.
On the pitching front, Framber Valdez delivered a stellar performance for the Astros, allowing just two singles over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Altuve and Mauricio Dubón also contributed offensively with three hits each, while Kyle Tucker made a strong return after being sidelined with a shin injury since June 3.
Arizona’s Ketel Marte returned to the lineup after an ankle injury, but the Diamondbacks struggled to find their groove against Valdez’s pitching. Despite a late offensive push, Arizona fell short against the dominant Astros lineup.
Looking ahead, the Astros will send Yusei Kikuchi to the mound to face off against Eduardo Rodriguez in the continuation of the series on Saturday. As the AL West race heats up, Houston aims to maintain their lead with key performances from players like Alvarez and Valdez.
Trainer’s Room
Diamondbacks: OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (left calf tightness) is on track to return by mid-September.
Astros: 3B Alex Bregman continues to deal with swelling in his right elbow, keeping him out of the lineup.
