Liz Cheney, the former Republican Representative who co-chaired the House investigation into the Jan. 6 attack, made a surprising announcement on Wednesday. She declared her support for Kamala Harris for president, breaking away from her party to endorse a Democratic candidate.
Cheney, a fierce critic of former President Trump, was ousted in her 2022 Republican primary in Wyoming as a result of her stance. At an event at Duke University, she emphasized the danger she believes Trump still poses to the country and explained her decision.
“I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, especially in swing states. As a conservative who cares about the Constitution, I have deeply considered this. Due to the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for him, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” stated Cheney.
Liz Cheney, the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, has been one of the most prominent Republican critics of Trump. She joins a growing list of Republicans, including former colleagues like Adam Kinzinger and Denver Riggleman, in supporting Harris. Additionally, over 200 alumni of the Bush administration and past Republican presidential campaigns have also endorsed Harris.
During the Jan. 6 attack, Cheney was in House Republican leadership but differed from her party on Trump’s accountability. She lost her leadership position and was among the few Republicans willing to serve on the Jan. 6 committee appointed by the House Democrats.
