The Rapid Re-housing Program for Foster KidsStay Updated with 12News

Imagine being a foster kid in our community, experiencing homelessness or aging out of the care system. This is the reality for many young individuals like David Mayles.

David Mayles, who spent his childhood in and out of foster care homes, had a deep desire to break out on his own and provide for himself. Despite the challenges he faced, he was determined to make a change in the patterns he had experienced in his family.

Forced out of his home at the tender age of 12, Mayles found himself grappling with housing instability and eventually ended up facing homelessness as he aged out of the system. The lack of roots to recall and the trauma of being removed from his home left him feeling lost and alone.

But then, a glimmer of hope appeared in the form of the “Rapid Re-housing Program” for foster kids in our community. This program, part of the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation, aims to provide housing stability to youth who have aged out of the care system or are experiencing homelessness.

One of the major causes of homelessness among youth in our community is the high cost of rent. Diane Daily, a representative from the foundation, emphasized the importance of housing stability in allowing these young individuals to work towards their long-term goals.

Over the last decade, the need for housing support for foster kids like Mayles has become increasingly apparent. The “Rapid Re-housing Program” has already received 114 referrals this year for youth who are on the brink of homelessness or are already homeless and in need of assistance.

In addition to housing support, the program also offers services for education and career planning. This holistic approach has helped individuals like Mayles to not only secure stable housing but also to pursue their dreams and aspirations.

Mayles, who now runs a successful lawn care business, reflects on the journey he has taken. From earning his first $10 by mowing a neighbor’s yard to building a thriving business, he has overcome challenges and obstacles along the way.

Mayles’ story is a testament to the resilience and determination of foster kids in our community. With the support of programs like the “Rapid Re-housing Program,” these young individuals can build a brighter future for themselves.
