Locally referred to as “The Valley,” the Phoenix Metropolitan Area is the largest in the Southwest and comprises several major cities beyond Phoenix itself. These include Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Surprise, Peoria, Gilbert, El Mirage, Avondale, Litchfield Park, Goodyear, and Buckeye.
The population of these cities combined totals 4,845,832 residents, as per the 2020 Census, making it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the US, trailing only behind Boston and Atlanta. Spanning over 9,000 square miles, Maricopa County is larger than seven U.S. states and houses approximately 63% of Arizona’s population. Notably, the county is home to one of the nation’s most extensive park systems, boasting an estimated 120,000 acres of open space parks with an array of recreational facilities.
Phoenix serves as the county seat, state capital, and the 5th most populous city in the US. The county itself holds historical significance, being named after the Maricopa Native American Tribe.
