Welcome Dr. Suresh Garimella: The New President of the University of Arizona
The Arizona Board of Regents announced on Friday the appointment of Dr. Suresh Garimella as the 23rd president of the University of Arizona. While an official start date has yet to be selected, anticipation is high for Dr. Garimella’s tenure.
Dr. Garimella currently serves as the 27th president of the University of Vermont and previously held the position of Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships at Purdue University. His appointment was met with unanimous approval from the board.
In a statement, Dr. Garimella expressed his gratitude for being selected as the next leader of the University of Arizona. He praised the institution for its esteemed reputation in research, health sciences, and the diversity of its student body. Dr. Garimella highlighted the opportunities ahead and emphasized his commitment to working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to elevate the university’s excellence both locally and globally.
As negotiations for his contract continue, the exact start date for Dr. Garimella is pending. His appointment follows the resignation of former president Robert Robbins, who stepped down in April amid financial challenges at the university. Robbins will remain in his role until Dr. Garimella officially assumes the presidency, expected to be in the late fall.
