Arizona Department of Education Plans to Increase Police Presence in Schools
In response to the recent surge in threats targeting schools in Arizona, Superintendent Tom Horne has proposed utilizing $15 million in carryover funds to enhance security measures on school campuses.
With an alarming rise in social media threats directed at schools across the state, Horne emphasized the crucial need for increased police presence in educational institutions. “There has been a notable increase in threats to campuses in Arizona and nationwide, and that makes it more important than ever to do all we can to provide armed officers at schools,” he stated.
Various school districts in Mesa, Phoenix, Buckeye, Scottsdale, and Tucson have recently dealt with violent threats, ultimately proven to be non-credible. Some juveniles have been charged for their involvement in spreading these threatening messages.
The Arizona Department of Education aims to begin accepting applications for the additional grant money by October 21, allowing schools to bolster their security measures promptly.
