The Race for Congressional District 3: Yassamin Ansari Declared Winner
The primary race for Congressional District 3 in Arizona was one of the closest contests, ultimately resulting in Yassamin Ansari being declared the winner after a recount process triggered by the slim margin between the top two candidates, Ansari and Raquel Terán.
Ansari, a former Phoenix City Council member, emerged victorious by just 39 votes over Terán, securing 19,087 votes to Terán’s 19,048. The margin was less than 0.5 percentage points, necessitating the recount under Arizona law. The results were announced by a Maricopa County judge on August 20.
With her win, Ansari is now set to face Republican Jeff Zink in the November general election for the open seat in a district that leans Democratic and encompasses parts of central Phoenix. The seat was left vacant by U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is now running for the U.S. Senate.
Following the results, Terán graciously congratulated Ansari and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting Democratic candidates in the upcoming election.
