Understanding the Voluntary Water Cutbacks in the West Valley
Liberty Utilities recently notified customers in the West Valley of voluntary water cutbacks, leaving many puzzled about the reasons behind this decision. Arizona Corporation Commissioner Anna Tovar is now seeking answers from the water company to shed light on the situation.
In cities like Avondale, Glendale, Goodyear, and Litchfield Park, customers were informed of Stage 2 restrictions in the revised curtailment plan tariff, urging them to reduce water usage voluntarily by half.
Tovar initiated an investigation into Liberty Utilities following customer complaints about water pressure issues last year. The company had previously assured customers that they were taking steps to avoid the need for such cutbacks.
The move to Stage 2 restrictions is a result of the company not meeting specific benchmarks set in the amended plan, such as maintaining water storage or well production below 80% capacity for 48 hours and identifying issues affecting sustained water demand.
As Tovar questions the necessity of Stage 2 restrictions, Liberty Utilities attributes the situation to the hot summer and high demand impacting reservoir replenishment. The company’s spokesperson emphasized the voluntary conservation efforts to safeguard the water supply amidst increased demand.
Despite efforts like the City of Goodyear supplying water to Liberty Utilities, concerns remain about a potential progression to Stage 3 restrictions, prompting Tovar’s proactive stance to seek clarity and prevent further escalations.
