Walmart to Pay $100,000 in Disability Discrimination Case
Last year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit against Walmart for disability discrimination. The case involved a cashier with a medical condition at a Walmart store in Bullhead City, Arizona.
The EEOC accused Walmart of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act by firing the cashier due to her medical condition, which resulted in her missing work. After two months of employment, the cashier was informed that her absences would no longer be excused.
Upon submitting a written request for an accommodation, the cashier was terminated, leading to the lawsuit. This week, the EEOC announced a resolution in which Walmart will pay $100,000 to the cashier. The company will also undergo a two-year injunction involving employee training, posting notices, and policy reviews.
Melinda Caraballo, district director of the EEOC’s Phoenix District Office, emphasized the importance of protecting workers with disabilities, stating, “Workers with disabilities should not be concerned that their disability will result in discipline or termination on the job.”
