Valley Engineers Partner with BGCAZ Kids for STEM Fun
Phoenix is buzzing with excitement as a group of children in Northeast Phoenix got a taste of the STEM world. Interns from a leading technology company showcased the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math in a thrilling and competitive way.
The gym at the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Valley’s Ed Robeson Branch was filled with cheers and laughter on a sunny July afternoon. Hundreds of Club Kids gathered to support their robotic vehicles as they raced through a challenging course, vying to be the fastest.
Interns from the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company teamed up with groups of children to construct and race their robots.
“TSMC and our Club Kids are working together to build and race robots, showcasing their STEM skills, collaboration, and teamwork,” explained Marcia Mintz, President and CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of the Valley.
Approximately 130 interns descended upon the Robson Branch to mentor the kids in building and racing the small, four-wheeled robots.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to the community and engage with the kids,” said Brian Harrison, President of TSMC Arizona. “We aim to spark their interest in technology, science, engineering, and math.”
The race held a special significance for one intern, Brandon Tanji, an engineering student at Arizona State University and intern at TSMC.
“It’s incredible to witness the potential of our future generation,” Tanji shared. “I was once like them, and seeing that they can achieve what I have achieved within our local community is truly inspiring.”
After an hour of building and fine-tuning, the room erupted with cheers as the races kicked off.
“By supporting Boys and Girls Clubs of the Valley, we empower kids to learn, grow, and participate in STEM programs, shaping them into the workforce of the future,” Mintz emphasized.
“It all starts at the Boys and Girls Club, where collaboration and new experiences pave the way for these kids,” Tanji added. “It’s fascinating to witness the impact of exposure to new opportunities.”
