Non-Citizen Confusion: How Did Luc Leemans Get Registered to Vote?
Luc Leemans, a 69-year-old green card holder who has been living in Arizona for decades, found himself in a puzzling situation after renewing his driver’s license online. Suddenly, he started receiving voter registration materials in the mail, despite not being a U.S. citizen.
Last week, the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office discovered a 20-year-old computer coding error that failed to verify if 98,000 voters provided proof of citizenship. Leemans, along with others affected by the error, received driver’s licenses issued before 1996 and are predominantly older, Republican-leaning voters.
After receiving a voter identification card and education guides for upcoming elections, Leemans reached out to election officials to rectify the situation. He was concerned about being wrongly registered to vote and made efforts to clarify his non-citizen status.
Former Federal Compliance Officer, Tammy Patrick, suggested that Leemans might have accidentally checked ‘yes’ on a citizenship question, leading to his erroneous registration. However, Leemans vehemently denies ever claiming U.S. citizenship and expressed frustration over the lack of clarity in the registration process.
Delving into the Investigation
Efforts to uncover how Leemans was registered to vote have been met with roadblocks. Despite inquiries to the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office and the Motor Vehicle Department, details remain elusive. Questions surrounding the coding error and the registration process for non-citizens persist, leaving concerns unresolved.
Leemans, who sought to obtain his voter records, faced delays and bureaucratic hurdles in accessing essential information. His persistence in clarifying his non-citizen status reflects a broader issue of transparency and accountability in the voter registration system.
As the investigation unfolds, the need for stringent verification processes and safeguards to prevent non-citizens from being mistakenly registered to vote becomes apparent. Leemans’ case exemplifies the importance of ensuring the integrity of electoral procedures and upholding the sanctity of the voting process.
