It has been two years since the tragic shooting incident that took the life of Dr. Thomas Meixner, a beloved professor at the University of Arizona. The shooter, a former graduate student, had a history of threats and should not have been allowed to purchase a gun. This heartbreaking event prompted his widow, Kathleen Meixner, to embark on a journey of advocacy for public safety reforms.

“We don’t want to think anything horrific like this could happen to a loved one,” said Kathleen Meixner, reflecting on the tragedy that changed her life forever. Despite the immense loss, Kathleen is determined to honor her husband’s memory by advocating for crucial changes in public safety protocols.

Dr. Meixner, a father, husband, and respected academic, was the head of the university’s Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences Department. His life was senselessly cut short by a former student with a troubled history. In the aftermath of the shooting, it became clear that there were gaps in communication and monitoring that could have prevented the tragedy.

Kathleen revealed that one of the key issues identified post-incident was the lack of seamless communication between law enforcement agencies regarding potential threats. The shooter had been reported to the police for planning to harm people, but the information did not reach the necessary channels in time.

A Mission for Change

Driven by the memory of her late husband, Kathleen has become a vocal advocate for improved school safety measures. She emphasized the need for better communication and collaboration among safety teams to prevent future tragedies.

Following intense scrutiny, the university implemented several recommendations for enhancing public safety, including the establishment of an Office of Public Safety and regular communication meetings among stakeholders. Kathleen highlighted the importance of continued vigilance, streamlined reporting processes, and mandatory safety training to protect the university community.

Despite the pain of her loss, Kathleen remains hopeful that her efforts will help prevent similar incidents in the future. She commended the university’s progress in implementing safety measures and urged for ongoing improvements to safeguard students and staff.

The Man Behind the Photograph

Sharing anecdotes about Dr. Meixner’s life, Kathleen painted a picture of a resilient and compassionate man. Despite battling cancer multiple times, Tom remained dedicated to his family and community. His commitment to staying connected with loved ones and making a difference in the world left a lasting impact on those around him.

As the anniversary of his passing approaches, Kathleen fondly remembers Tom’s passion for civic engagement and encourages others to honor his memory by participating in the democratic process. She emphasized the importance of voter registration and informed decision-making as a tribute to her late husband’s values.

Life in Prison

The perpetrator of Dr. Meixner’s murder, Murad Dervish, was sentenced to life in prison in June 2024. The court proceedings revealed gaps in the system that allowed Dervish to obtain a firearm illegally, despite previous restrictions. Kathleen expressed her desire to advocate for stricter gun laws, including background checks and red flag laws, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As Kathleen continues her journey of advocacy and remembrance, the legacy of Dr. Thomas Meixner lives on, inspiring positive change and a commitment to a safer tomorrow.
