Tempe City Council Unanimously Votes to Reduce Speed Limits
In a move aimed at enhancing road safety, the Tempe City Council has voted unanimously to reduce speed limits on several streets in the city.
The decision, part of Tempe’s Operation Slow Down initiative, reflects a proactive approach to improving road safety for all users.
Councilmember Jennifer Adams emphasized the importance of slower speeds, stating, “The slower we go, the better we’ll be, especially in areas with high pedestrian and bicycle traffic.”
The areas where speed limits will be reduced include Mill Avenue, College Avenue, First Street, and Southern Avenue. These changes are intended to create more consistent speeds and reduce the risk of accidents.
According to Adams, the decision to lower speed limits was influenced by the high volume of daily commuters in Tempe and the need to address safety concerns on busy roads.
Effective 30 days from the council meeting, the speed limit reductions will come at a cost of $8,000. Increased police enforcement will also be implemented to ensure compliance and educate drivers about the changes.
Adams urged drivers to be cautious and aware of their surroundings to avoid fines, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the new speed limits.
