Remembering 9/11: Honoring the Lives Lost
As the sun rose on the morning of September 11, 2001, the world changed forever. In a heartfelt tribute to the victims of the tragic events that unfolded that day, 2,977 American flags were planted at Tempe Beach Park, each one representing a life lost.
The Healing Field at Tempe Beach Park served as a poignant backdrop for a ceremony held at 5:46 a.m., the exact time the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Amidst tears and powerful emotions, the community came together to ensure that the memory of those lost would never fade.
Chairman of the Healing Field, Nick Bastian, emphasized the importance of personalizing the tragedy by planting individual flags, each bearing the name of a victim. “You start to think about that specific person and their family and how that affected millions of people throughout our country,” Bastian remarked.
Visitor Terry Locke, who has made it a tradition to visit the field annually, expressed the enduring impact of the tribute. “It’s been 23 years since 9/11 and it never loses its appeal to me,” Locke shared, highlighting the lasting significance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives.
Notably, yellow ribbons adorned the perimeter of the flags, symbolizing the first responders who bravely gave their lives while attempting to save others. Bastian drew attention to the symbolism, stating that it signifies their ongoing protection of those in need.
The day’s events concluded with a candlelight vigil at 7:00 p.m., providing another opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance. As we reflect on the names and stories behind each flag, it serves as a solemn reminder of the resilience and unity that emerged from tragedy.
Let us continue to pay our respects, show our sense of country, and honor the legacy of those who perished on that fateful day.
