The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Plans to Improve State Route 347
Living in Maricopa comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to the commute on State Route 347. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has taken note of the concerns raised by residents and is now in the early stages of addressing the issues faced by commuters.
At a recent meeting held at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center, ADOT unveiled its plans for SR 347. The residents, who showed up in large numbers, expressed their anxieties about the road and the need for improvements.
One resident, Mona Politte, described the road as a “death trap” and expressed her fear of driving on it. With Maricopa essentially being landlocked and SR 347 being the main artery connecting the city to Interstate 10, the need for upgrades is apparent.
Population growth has been a major factor contributing to the traffic congestion on SR 347. With Maricopa witnessing a significant increase in residents in recent years, the strain on the roadway has become more evident.
ADOT has laid out plans for three major improvements on SR 347. The first involves widening the road by adding a lane in each direction. While studies are ongoing, securing funding remains a priority before moving forward with the project.
The second project focuses on building an interchange at Riggs Road to alleviate congestion and enhance safety. Final designs are set to begin in 2025, providing a separate route for SR 347 traffic.
Lastly, ADOT aims to improve intersections along SR 347, with construction expected to commence in 2025. These projects aim to address the growing traffic volumes and ensure the safety and efficiency of the roadway.
Steve Elliott, a spokesperson for ADOT, emphasized the agency’s commitment to the SR 347 corridor projects and assured residents that progress is being made. While some residents are satisfied with the plans presented, many are eager to see tangible improvements sooner rather than later.
