Tokyo Woman Becomes World’s Oldest Living Person at 116

When 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka was told she had become the world’s oldest living person, her response was simple and humble – “Thank you.” This remarkable woman from Osaka, Japan, now holds the title following the passing of Maria Branyas, who was 117 years old.

Tomiko Itooka was born on May 23, 1908, and her age has been confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group, placing her at the top of its World Supercentenarian Rankings List. She has witnessed major historical events like both World Wars and the development of modern technology, living through more than a century of profound change.

Living in a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, Itooka enjoys her daily routine of having a popular yogurt-flavored drink and indulging in her favorite food, bananas. She celebrated her recent birthday with flowers, a cake, and a card from the mayor, showing her appreciation for life’s simple joys.

Not only was Itooka a talented volleyball player in high school, but she also managed her husband’s textile factory during World War II. After his passing, she lived independently in Nara before moving to the nursing home. Even after turning 100, she continued to enjoy long hikes and even climbed Mount Ontake twice, showcasing her strength and vitality.

Tomiko Itooka’s remarkable story is a testament to resilience, gratitude, and a love for life that inspires us all. Let’s celebrate this incredible woman who has lived through history and continues to shine as the world’s oldest living person at 116 years old.
