Artistic Swimming: The Graceful Competition
Artistic swimming, previously known as synchronized swimming, has been captivating audiences for decades. 40 years ago, it made its Olympic debut in Los Angeles, showcasing the incredible skill and precision required for this unique sport. Today, a team from Scottsdale, Arizona is making waves on the international stage, representing the United States with grace and talent.
The Scottsdale Synchro team recently competed at the PanAm Aquatic Championships in Lima, Peru, bringing home first place in both the senior free and senior tech categories. Led by coach Xinya “Olivia” Zhang, a former member of the Chinese National Team, these athletes embody endurance, strength, precision, and grace in the pool.
“Artistic swimming is a demanding sport that combines swimming, acrobatics, dancing in the water, flexibility, strength, and conditioning. It requires a lot from the athletes,” Zhang explained. The team at Scottsdale Synchro trains rigorously, practicing skills like treading water, breath holding, and lifting teammates out of the water without touching the pool bottom.
One standout athlete, 15-year-old Sophie Schroeder, has set her sights on the Olympics after falling in love with the sport nine years ago. With a first-place win in the senior free duet category at the PanAm Championships, Sophie is on a path to success that could lead her to the ultimate stage in 2028.
As the world looks ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, keep an eye on the talented athletes from Scottsdale Synchro who may be competing for gold in the pool. Follow their journey on X and Instagram.
