In a shocking incident at ASPC-Lewis in Buckeye, Arizona, a prison staff member experienced a brutal attack by an inmate, resulting in severe injuries. The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry confirmed the assault on September 3, 2024.
The ADCRR spokesperson revealed that inmate Jacob Purdue was the perpetrator of the attack, causing the staff member to suffer impactful injuries. A criminal investigation is currently underway, and Purdue has been transferred to maximum custody.
Carlos Garcia, executive director of the Arizona Correctional Peace Officers Association, identified the injured staff member as a corrections officer. He expressed concern over the permanent nature of the injuries and attributed the incident to understaffing at the prison.
Prison records depict Purdue’s history of criminal activities since the 1990s, including burglary, robbery, and involvement in a criminal street gang. Purdue received disciplinary infractions for Assault on Staff with Serious Injury and was subsequently moved to Eyman prison from Lewis.
The ADCRR’s full response emphasized their commitment to holding the involved inmates accountable and ensuring the victim is provided with necessary support for recovery. The Department also reiterated its dedication to maintaining a safe environment for rehabilitation and public safety.
