Phoenix has recently installed over 40 special grates around the city, with the main goal of preventing pollution.

Just a few days ago, 12News showed you how you can do your part to prevent pollution of stormwater.

At this moment, the city of Phoenix is implementing a completely new technology to help keep trash out of our rivers, streams, and lakes.

During the summer of 2024, the city of Phoenix launched a pilot program that tested grates throughout the downtown area.

So far, approximately 50 grates have been installed, with the main goal of preventing trash pollution.

“Some people might think it clogs the storm drain, but the grates actually open enough to let water pass over the trash and retain it there, preventing it from entering our storm drains,” said James Mendez, the chief water quality inspector.

These grates are mechanical devices, technology that doesn’t require them to be electronic. The grates are spring-operated, so they close automatically.

It’s a team effort. The newly installed street sweepers and grates are already keeping trash out of storm drains.

If the pilot program is successful, the city of Phoenix plans to install several more grates.
