Phoenix Officials Meet with DOJ After Scathing Report on Police Department
In the wake of a damning report from the U.S. Department of Justice criticizing the Phoenix police department, city officials from Phoenix traveled to Washington D.C. for a crucial meeting with the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ.
The purpose of this initial meeting is to kickstart productive discussions between the City of Phoenix and the DOJ, aiming to find a path forward that benefits the Phoenix community as a whole, stated city officials in a press release.
City Manager Jeff Barton, Assistant City Manager Lori Bays, Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan, and representatives from the City Law Department are all in attendance for this pivotal meeting.
On a related note, the city council recently voted unanimously in favor of a set of proposals designed to enhance accountability and transparency following the DOJ’s accusations of the Phoenix police engaging in unconstitutional behaviors that infringed on residents’ rights.
Despite this, the city has resisted the idea of accepting a consent decree or federal oversight over the Phoenix Police Department in response to the DOJ’s report.
Details of the meeting agenda have not been disclosed to the public, leaving many curious about the potential outcomes.
