Remembering Dillon Mares: A Life Lost Too Soon

Friends and family are mourning the tragic loss of 29-year-old Dillon Mares, who was known and loved by all who knew him. His life was cut short over the weekend when a driver ran a red light, resulting in a fatal accident on his way home from work.

According to Phoenix police, Mares was struck and killed at the intersection of 16th Street and Camelback Road by 24-year-old Travis Smith, who ran a red light and collided with Mares’ vehicle. Smith fled the scene but later turned himself in, facing charges of felony reckless manslaughter.

Described as an avid runner with big ambitions, Mares was training for a marathon in February 2025. He regularly attended the Scottsdale Run Club’s weekly group runs and was dedicated to his fitness goals.

His friends and loved ones gathered at Tempe Town Lake for a special run in his honor, reminiscing about his kind and vibrant personality. Mares’ mother, Brittany Lockwood, expressed gratitude to the community for their support and love for Dillon.

As the legal process unfolds, Smith remains in custody with a $150,000 cash-only bond. Mares’ family has established a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses and family transportation to Phoenix. Contributions can be made here.
