Rising Evictions in Phoenix Prompt Innovative Housing Solutions
Recent data from EvictionLab.org reveals a concerning trend in Phoenix – eviction filings spiked by 33% in August compared to pre-pandemic numbers. In response to this growing issue, a local organization is stepping up to provide sustainable housing solutions to those in need.
Kordale Bryant, a former homeless individual, shared his experience of living on the streets after losing his apartment due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, Bryant’s story is not uncommon, as many families and individuals in Phoenix are facing similar challenges.
One organization making a difference is A New Leaf in Mesa, which serves over 30,000 people annually. Bryant found refuge at their East Valley Men’s Center, where he received meals, shelter, and support services.
Recognizing the need for transitional housing, A New Leaf is expanding its program to include 30 efficiency units known as bridge housing. This initiative aims to provide men who have found employment and stability with the necessary resources to transition into independent housing.
With the support of the City of Mesa, A New Leaf secured funding for the project, emphasizing the importance of preventing evictions and helping vulnerable populations achieve self-reliance. The collaborative effort between the organization and the city reflects a commitment to promoting human kindness and facilitating life transformations for individuals like Bryant.
As the project moves forward, A New Leaf plans to break ground on the expansion in November. For more information on their services, visit their website here.
