The Controversy of Hiking Hours in Phoenix

The Controversy of Hiking Hours in PhoenixUp to Speed

Exploring the stunning trails in Phoenix has been a favorite pastime for many, but recent changes have sparked a debate among hikers. Jes Dobbs, a longtime hiker and Phoenix resident, expressed her love for the urban hiking opportunities the city offers. However, a shift in management has led to confusion and frustration within the hiking community.

Despite the sign at Echo Canyon stating “sunrise to sunset,” hikers have traditionally been allowed access to parking lots well before dawn. This accessibility has been crucial, especially during the scorching summer months when temperatures soar above 100°F for days on end.

With the recent termination of the maintenance company’s contract, operations at popular trails like Camelback and Piestewa have changed dramatically. The responsibility of opening gates early now falls on park rangers, causing inconvenience for early-morning hikers.

To address these issues, Dobbs and the Camelback Culture Community have initiated a petition calling for extended trail hours from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round. The petition also advocates for the installation of automated gates at trailheads to ensure consistent access for all users.

Already garnering over 1,700 signatures, the petition highlights the community’s desire for clear and safe access to trails during optimal hours. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department has acknowledged the concerns raised by the petition and stated that modifications to trail hours can be considered by the Parks and Recreation Board.

As the debate continues, hikers like Dobbs remain hopeful for positive change in the city’s trail access policies. With over 41,000 acres of desert and mountain parks and preserves in Phoenix, maintaining access to these natural wonders is crucial for the city’s outdoor enthusiasts.
