Akeem Terrell Settlement: Phoenix City Council Approves $800,000 SettlementStay Informed with 12News+

Tragedy struck on New Year’s Day 2021 when Akeem Terrell died after being taken into custody by Phoenix police officers. The incident led to a lawsuit filed on Terrell’s behalf, alleging officers used unnecessary force and failed to provide medical assistance when he was in distress.

According to the lawsuit, Terrell was caught up in a physical altercation with police officers after allegedly refusing to leave a party. The situation escalated when officers applied pressure on Terrell while he was on the ground of a jail cell. After Terrell became motionless, he was left unattended for six minutes before medical help was finally sought, ultimately leading to his death.

In response to the lawsuit, the Phoenix City Council voted 8-1 to authorize a settlement of up to $800,000 to the family of Akeem Terrell. This decision reflects a commitment to justice and accountability in cases involving police misconduct and excessive force.
