Peoria Unified School District Board Reverses Decision, Saves Mental Health Program
After two weeks of public outcry, the Peoria Unified School District board voted 4-0 on Thursday to save a critical mental health program that was initially facing elimination. The program, which serves over 1,800 students with various needs, was at risk of ending at the end of the month if not for the board’s decision to allocate district funds to keep it running.
Initially, two board members had voted against accepting federal funds for the program, but they reversed their decision following community pressure and a reevaluation of the program’s impact on students.
One of the board members who changed her vote, Board President Becky Proudfit, explained that she initially had reservations about the temporary federal grant but now recognizes the importance of providing ongoing support for mental health services in schools.
The district’s mental health program includes a team of social workers, counselors, and interns who offer services such as grief counseling, anxiety coping skills, and homeless support to students. The program has been praised by community members for its positive impact on the student body.
Despite some concerns raised by a few board members and community members about social workers’ influence on students, the majority of speakers at the meeting voiced strong support for the program and highlighted the importance of prioritizing students’ mental well-being.
While there are still ongoing discussions about potential future funding sources for the program, the recent decision to preserve it using district funds signifies a commitment to ensuring that students have access to vital mental health services in their schools.
This situation at Peoria Unified reflects a larger trend nationwide, where social workers in schools are facing potential cuts due to the depletion of federal Covid funds and pressure from various groups. However, advocates emphasize the importance of prioritizing mental health support for students to promote overall well-being and academic success.
As the community continues to advocate for mental health resources in schools, it is essential to recognize the significance of programs like the one at Peoria Unified in supporting students’ mental wellness and ensuring a positive learning environment for all.
