Here’s a recap of the exciting events that unfolded on the last day of the Paris Olympics.

US Women’s Basketball Team Emerges Victorious

In a heart-stopping showdown, A’ja Wilson led the U.S. women’s basketball team to a close 67-66 victory over France. This hard-fought win solidified their remarkable streak of eight consecutive gold medals, breaking a record previously held by the American men’s program.

The women’s triumph came on the heels of the U.S. men’s team also defeating France, making history as the first time the same two teams competed in both Olympic gold medal games. However, the women’s game was a tense affair, with the outcome hanging in the balance until the final minute.

Jordan Chiles Controversy

On a disappointing note, U.S. Olympic officials are appealing a court ruling that demanded American gymnast Jordan Chiles to return the bronze medal she earned in the floor exercise event at the Paris Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport voided a scoring inquiry appeal by Chiles’ coach, alleging it exceeded the time limit by seconds.

Despite the controversy, USA Gymnastics is contesting the ruling, citing video evidence that shows the appeal was lodged within the stipulated time frame.

Other Highlights from the Final Day

The U.S. men’s water polo team’s surprising bronze medal victory over Hungary provided a thrilling end to their Paris Olympics campaign. Meanwhile, Italy stunned the defending champion U.S. team in women’s volleyball, clinching gold in straight sets.

In the overall medal count, the U.S. dominated with a total of 126 medals, including 40 golds, 42 silvers, and 44 bronzes. China followed closely behind, securing 91 medals, with Japan and Britain also putting up commendable performances.

As the Paris Olympics came to a close, it was a testament to the incredible athleticism, sportsmanship, and drama that unfolded over the course of the Games. The stage is now set for the next Olympic spectacle in Los Angeles in 2028.
