Crime fighting efforts in the Phoenix metro area have hit a milestone with the successful completion of Operation North Star. This national violent crime reduction effort led to the arrest of 301 targeted fugitives and the clearance of 358 active warrants over a span of 65 days.

The results of Operation North Star were announced by United States Attorney General Merrick Garland and United States Marshals Service Director Ronald Davis on October 1. According to a news release, the operation was part of a larger initiative to combat violent crime across the country.

During a news conference, United States Acting Marshal for the District of Arizona, Van Bayless, highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation in tackling criminal activities. He emphasized the commitment to seeking justice for victims and holding offenders accountable.

From early May to early September of 2024, law enforcement agencies in Arizona, including the U.S. Marshals WANTED Task Force, intensified their efforts to apprehend fugitives involved in serious crimes. In total, 3,421 fugitives were arrested nationwide, with a significant number of arrests made in the Phoenix metro area.

During the operation in Phoenix, law enforcement seized 60 firearms, over 230 kilograms of illegal drugs, three vehicles, and nearly $100,000 in cash. Bayless underscored the importance of removing dangerous individuals, illegal firearms, and illicit substances from the streets to ensure community safety.
