Have you ever heard of ‘swarming’? It involves two or more assailants ganging up on an individual and beating them up. It’s a disturbing form of violence that is becoming increasingly prevalent, especially among teenagers.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell is taking a stand against swarming by proposing stricter penalties for such assaults. She is advocating for new legislation that would classify swarming as a Class 4 felony, ensuring that perpetrators face serious consequences for their actions.
According to Mitchell, this legislative proposal is a response to a rise in assault cases involving multiple attackers, particularly targeting teens. One tragic incident in the East Valley resulted in the death of 16-year-old Preston Lord, prompting local authorities to take action.
Republican lawmakers Matt Gress and Julie Willoughby are backing Mitchell’s proposal, recognizing the need to address the issue of swarming and protect vulnerable individuals from such senseless violence.
