Welcome to the Big 12: Kansas State Dominates Arizona in Nonconference Showdown
Noah Fifita threw for an impressive 268 yards, while Tetairoa McMillan hauled in 11 receptions for 138 yards, but it was not enough for Arizona as they dropped to 2-1 following a tough battle against Kansas State.
The Wildcats of Kansas State, led by Avery Johnson’s two touchdown passes and a spectacular punt return touchdown by Dylan Edwards, managed to shut out Arizona in the second half and secure a decisive 31-7 victory.
This rare nonconference matchup between the newly-minted Big 12 rivals saw No. 14 Kansas State hand No. 20 Arizona their first loss of the season, ending their nine-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Despite the game not affecting the league standings, both teams fought hard to make a statement on the field. Johnson finished with 156 passing yards and 110 rushing yards, supported by D.J. Giddens’ 86 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Arizona coach Brent Brennan praised the Kansas State team for their solid performance, acknowledging their strong play and impressive coaching.
Kansas State’s victory was marked by standout plays, such as Edwards’ punt return touchdown and Johnson’s dynamic performance, leading his team to consecutive touchdown drives in the second half.
The Takeaway
Arizona’s struggle with penalties and Kansas State’s defensive prowess were key factors in the game. Arizona’s multiple penalties and Kansas State’s strong defensive showing limited Arizona’s offensive opportunities.
