Phoenix is taking proactive steps to combat pollution with the installation of over 40 grates throughout the city.
12News recently highlighted the City of Phoenix’s innovative approach to preventing storm water pollution. The city has introduced new technology in the form of specialized grates to keep trash out of our waterways.
During the summer of 2024, a pilot program was launched in downtown Phoenix to test these grates. With approximately 50 grates already in place, the primary objective is to prevent pollution effectively.
James Mendez, a Senior Water Quality Inspector, explained the function of the grates, stating, “The grates open up just enough to let water bypass the garbage and hold onto it, preventing it from entering our storm drains.” This mechanical technology allows water to flow while capturing debris.
The grates are spring-loaded and do not require electronic components, emphasizing simplicity and efficiency in pollution prevention.
The combined efforts of the grates and street sweepers have already proven successful in keeping trash out of storm drains.
If the pilot program continues to yield positive results, the City of Phoenix plans to expand the installation of these beneficial grates.
