The Truth Behind the National Guard’s Presence in New York City
Former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, was set to be sentenced on Sept. 18 in his hush money case in New York City. However, the presiding judge postponed the sentencing until Nov. 26.
Before the postponement, conservative commentator Laura Loomer shared a video of National Guard troops entering a Brooklyn subway station on Sept. 4. Loomer’s post suggested that the National Guard presence was related to Trump’s sentencing, speculating that law enforcement officers might call out sick to avoid participating in the event.
However, the reality is quite different. The National Guard is not in New York City because of Trump’s sentencing. They are actually assisting the NYPD with transit patrols, not for any specific event related to Trump.
The Truth Revealed
The New York National Guard confirmed that their deployment has nothing to do with Trump’s sentencing. The troops seen in the viral video are part of the Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a task force established after 9/11 to help deter crime on the subway system.
Eric Durr, the director of public affairs for the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, clarified that these troops have been stationed in New York City since March and are not recently deployed for Trump’s sentencing. The Joint Task Force Empire Shield’s primary objective is to support local law enforcement agencies in maintaining security, especially in high-traffic areas like subway stations.
Therefore, the claims circulating on social media about the National Guard preparing for Trump’s sentencing are false. The presence of the National Guard in New York City is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and security, not a response to any specific event.
