Unbearable Heat at Sonoran Palms Apartments in Mesa, AZ
Living without air conditioning during a scorching Arizona summer can be unbearable. This is the reality for some residents at the Sonoran Palms Apartments in Mesa, located off of Country Club Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.
“It’s been hell living here,” expressed Christopher Houston, one of the affected residents. For Houston, the problem has persisted since the end of June, with his apartment reaching a sweltering 87 degrees on a Thursday afternoon.
Despite multiple complaints to the management, residents like Houston have only received temporary cooling solutions that are inadequate. Water leaks from the AC system have exacerbated the situation, pushing residents to seek alternative living arrangements.
12News investigated and found other apartments also facing similar heat issues. Catherine Ockerman shared her struggles, including having to resort to using wet washcloths to cope with the heat.
The property manager, Kerri McIntire, acknowledged the problem and attributed delays in repairs to the unavailability of necessary replacement parts. She assured residents that efforts were underway to address the issue promptly, offering portable cooling units as temporary relief.
While the community waits for a resolution, the City of Mesa emphasized the importance of landlords providing essential services like air conditioning, especially during extreme heatwaves. Tenants were encouraged to report grievances to the relevant authorities for action.
As frustrations mount, residents like Houston have sought legal recourse to rectify the situation and ensure their rights are upheld. This echoes recent legal actions taken against other landlords for failing to provide adequate living conditions.
