Maricopa County Prepares for Election Day with Over 240 Polling Locations
As the 2024 election approaches, Maricopa County in Arizona is making preparations to ensure that voters have access to polling locations across the county. With the loss of some traditional sites like schools, the county has had to pivot and find alternative venues for voters to cast their ballots.
Scott Jarrett, Maricopa County Elections Coordinator, announced that there will be more than 240 polling locations available for voters, representing a 20%-30% increase over the 2020 general election cycle to accommodate the expected voter turnout. The majority of these locations will be set up in churches, as some schools have opted out of hosting polling locations.
In a statement, Jarrett mentioned, “We were using a mortuary to have a voting location. We have a few aquatic centers around the Valley that are also serving, so we’re always looking for new partners.” Polling locations are selected by a team of three people who scout for places throughout the year, ensuring that each location meets specific requirements such as compliance with the American Disabilities Act, sufficient parking, and enough power outlets for equipment.
Despite the challenges, Maricopa County remains committed to providing accessible and secure polling locations for voters. One school district that will not serve as a polling location this year is Mesa Public Schools, citing logistical challenges and prioritizing the safety and security of students.
Thom Reilly, co-director of The Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy, highlighted the changing landscape of polling locations, with schools and churches facing security concerns and increased costs. County and state officials are now looking for alternative venues like warehouses to accommodate voters, impacting their budgets.
While the shift away from traditional polling locations may pose challenges, Maricopa County Superintendent Steve Watson emphasized the importance of engaging voters, especially the next generation. Watson expressed confidence in the safety and efficiency of polling locations, encouraging all eligible voters to participate in the democratic process.
Maricopa County will release a list of polling locations 45 days before election day, providing voters with ample time to plan their visit. Stay updated on all election news and developments in Arizona by subscribing to our 12News YouTube channel.
