Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer Encourages Fact-Checking Before Sharing Misinformation

In a recent turn of events, Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer found himself at odds with Elon Musk after Musk shared misinformation about Arizona elections with his massive following of 200 million on social media.

Richer, appearing on “Sunday Square Off,” pleaded with Musk and urged him to verify information before posting it. “Before posting this, ask. I would love to explain some of these processes so that he could use his immense microphone to share accurate information,” Richer stated.

Elon Musk’s controversial posts sparked controversy, with one inquiring about Arizona’s alleged refusal to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, gathering 38 million views. Musk further fueled the fire by agreeing with a post accusing states of cheating in swing states.

Responding directly to Musk, Richer highlighted previous inaccuracies in Musk’s posts about Arizona elections and offered his office as a resource for correct information.

Trump Supporter Files Lawsuit Against Arizona Counties

The online clash took place amidst a lawsuit filed by Trump ally Stephen Miller against all 15 Arizona counties for failing to remove noncitizens from voter rolls. The issue revolves around a law upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court and a federal judge, requiring proof of citizenship for voting in state or local elections.

Hi @elonmusk.

This is a lawsuit. You’re very familiar with them. Lawsuits can allege anything. An allegation is called an allegation because it has not be proven.

For instance, Nikola sued Tesla for $2 billion in damages for ALLEGED patent infringement.

Addressing Misconceptions About Noncitizen Voting

Musk’s promotion of theories regarding noncitizen voting in Arizona echoes unsupported claims made by former President Trump. Despite these theories, evidence of large-scale noncitizen voting remains limited. The spread of false information has gained traction in various platforms as Republicans strive to support Trump’s baseless election fraud allegations.

Trump’s offer to Musk for a role in his administration, along with Musk’s commitment to fund Trump’s candidacy, further add to the controversy.

Importance of Verifying Information

The repercussions of spreading misinformation in elections are severe, as evidenced by the threats received by Richer. Following his interview, Richer met with authorities to discuss a pending trial against an individual accused of issuing death threats due to misinformation consumption.

In light of these incidents, Richer emphasizes the responsibility of influential figures like Musk to delve deeper into claims before sharing them, given the potential impact on public perception and safety.
