Warning: The following content contains details that may be distressing to some readers.
In a tragic and devastating incident, the Marana Police Department has released body camera footage capturing the heartbreaking moments when an Arizona father, Christopher Scholtes, discovered that his child had passed away after being left in a car for several hours on a scorching summer day.
Scholtes is now facing first-degree murder and child abuse charges in connection to the death of his daughter, which occurred on July 9. Conflicting accounts have emerged in the investigation, with Scholtes initially claiming he left the child in the car to nap with the air conditioner running while he went inside for approximately 30 minutes.
However, police later determined that the child had been in the car for up to four hours, exposed to direct sunlight and extreme heat.
The body camera footage reveals Scholtes’ anguish and disbelief as he learns of his daughter’s tragic fate. He is seen pacing around his house, visibly distraught and repeatedly asking for updates on his daughter’s condition.
Further investigation uncovered disturbing details, as police records revealed that Scholtes had a history of leaving his children unattended in the vehicle while he played games or tended to other tasks. On the day of the incident, Scholtes’ wife sent him a text message reprimanding him for leaving the children in the car, to which he responded with remorse and regret.
As the legal process unfolds, Scholtes is expected to appear in court in September to face the charges brought against him.
