Revitalizing a Community: U.S. Attorney Shuts Down Crime-Ridden Hotel in Phoenix
Residents near I-17 and West Bethany Home Road in Phoenix have a renewed sense of hope as the U.S. Attorney’s office recently seized a local hotel that had long been associated with criminal activities such as drugs and prostitution.
The Royal Inn, once a hub of crime, now sits boarded up and closed, bringing relief to the community.
Councilwoman Betty Guardado expressed her pride in the closure of the hotel, emphasizing the negative impact it had on the neighborhood, especially on children who had to witness illicit activities on a daily basis.
The shutdown of the Royal Inn came after a thorough investigation conducted by the Phoenix Police Department and the FBI, revealing a history of drug-related and other criminal activities on the property.
While this action is a significant step forward, community leaders acknowledge that there is still work to be done to address broader issues in the 27th Avenue Corridor, an area plagued by various challenges.
Jeff Spellman, a member of the Violence Impact Project Coalition, likened the ongoing effort to improve the area to a game of Whac-A-Mole, where problems keep arising and must be tackled continuously.
Despite the challenges ahead, the closure of the Royal Inn is seen as a crucial milestone in the revitalization of the community, signaling progress in reclaiming safe and livable neighborhoods.
Guardado emphasized the commitment to continue addressing similar issues in the area, ensuring that residents can reclaim their neighborhoods and enjoy a better quality of life.
