The Apple Juice Recall: What You Need to Know

If you’ve been enjoying a glass of apple juice lately, you might want to check your fridge. The recent recall of apple juice has expanded to include over 133,000 cases sold at various retailers across the country.

The recall initially began with the “Great Value” brand juice sold at Walmart, covering nearly 10,000 cases. However, it has now spread to include multiple brands sold at supermarkets and pharmacies like Aldi, BJs, Market Basket, Walgreens, and Weis Markets.

Some of the newly added brands in the recall are “Nice! 100% Apple Juice” and “Clover Valley 100% Apple Juice,” among others. A full list of affected products can be found on the FDA’s recall page.

Walmart: If you purchased Great Value 8oz or 96oz Apple Juice from specific stores in certain states, check for the best buy dates and UPC codes mentioned in the recall notice.

Aldi: Customers in 16 states may have bought Nature’s Nectar 100% Apple Juice, so be sure to check the best by dates and UPC code provided.

Walgreens, Key Food, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Dollar General, Weis, Market Basket, and Lidl: Various brands and sizes of apple juice from these retailers have also been included in the recall. Check for specific product details in the official recall notice.

Arsenic contamination in the apple juice led to the voluntary recall by the manufacturer, Refresco Beverages US Inc. Arsenic, a toxic substance, can cause health issues when ingested in elevated levels.

Although the levels found in the recalled juice bottles are not expected to cause severe health consequences, it’s essential to be cautious. The FDA has not reported any illnesses associated with the recall so far.

Arsenic, especially the inorganic form found in the apple juice, is a known carcinogen and can lead to symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, and muscle cramping in high concentrations. The FDA has classified the recall as urgent but not likely to result in serious medical issues.
